Joining Critical Ms
Thank you for your interest in Critical Ms. We are an active group of professional writers who meet regularly to critique each other’s work.
Our group size ranges from 7 to 10 members and we only occasionally have openings. While most of our new members come by referral, we do occasionally accept writers who apply to us directly.
If you are interested in joining Critical Ms, please see our guidelines below before contacting us.
Critical Ms is a critique group. Group members take turns submitting works-in-progress to the group for written feedback and discussion during our bimonthly meetings.
Critical Ms is for serious committed writers of all genres. While our members range from emerging writers to published authors, we all see ourselves as professionals looking to improve our craft. Members must be willing to accept professional critique of their work and be able to provide meaningful feedback to other members.
Meetings are held every 2 weeks at the Whitby Public Library; we do not meet in July, August or December.
Members are expected to attend all meetings, with only rare absences. Members unable to attend a meeting are still expected to read and provide written critique of the work submitted for that meeting.
SUBMISSIONS & CRITIQUES
While we have no fixed submission schedule, members should be actively writing and regularly putting work on the table for critique.
Members can expect to spend 2-4 hours reading manuscripts and writing critiques prior to each meeting. A typical critique includes a marked up manuscript and written commentary.
Then we would love to hear from you!
Please email us and introduce yourself. Give us a bit of background and tell us about your writing projects. It would also help if you’d include a link to your blog, web page or your LinkedIn profile.
We will contact you within two weeks and let you know if we feel you might be a good fit for Critical Ms.
If so and we have an opening, we will invite you to submit a piece to the group and attend a series of 3 "introductory" meetings to give both us and you a chance to see how well we work together.
If we have no openings, but feel you would make a good addition in the future, we will keep your name on our waiting list for 6 months. You may email us again after that time if you’d like to remain on the waiting list.
